In Islam basic concept of leadership, government and ruling is not inherited but on it is decided on level of discreet and cautious. At a stage negotiations was started among Imam Hassan and Muawiya. The main points of treaty are given below:
Muawiya will act according to Koran and Sunnah as well as follow to rightly guided caliphs.
Muawiya will not appoint his successor but a successor will be selected by electoral council.
The people of Iraq and Syria who supported both Ali and Muawiya would be safe.
Muawiya will not act secretly or openly against Hassan or against his companions.

According Shiites, Muawiya was seeking a chance to remove a obstacle (Imam Hassan) to appoint or nominate his successor i.e. Yazid. Imam Hassan was poisoned through a complicated plot. This episode is named as The Monsters Captive.
